Medical Tourism

Medical tourism
is a term that has risen from the rapid growth of international healthcare where patients are traveling to other countries to obtain general medical surgery, cosmetic plastic surgery and dental surgery at a fraction of the cost of healthcare when compared to their home country.

Who should consider Medical Tourism?

Most of our customers fall under one of the following categories:

1) Uninsured
The census bureau estimates that there are almost 45.7 million Americans that are uninsured. When these individuals are faced with medical hardships, medical tourism often turns out to be an attractive alternative to expensive procedures in the US.

2) Underinsured
Many individuals often find themselves in positions where their insurance plans do not provide sufficient coverage. At times, paying the entire cost of procedures abroad is cheaper than paying the deductible and co-pays at home. This is often the case with dental procedures. It is more expensive to have 3-4 root canals in the US with 80% insurance than pay for the entire procedure in India or Thailand including airfare.

3) Procedures that Insurance companies do not approve
A number of medical tourists choose to travel abroad to get specific procedures as insurance companies sometimes do not approve the course of treatment planned by physicians. For example: medical tourists often travel for IVF treatment as insurance companies often do not approve IVF treatment until all other fertility options have been exhausted. These options usually cost a lot and take more than a year to complete.

4) Avoid waiting lists
Medical tourists coming from countries with free national healthcare often choose to travel abroad to avoid long waiting times for non essential medical procedures. For example: Procedures which only improve comfort of life like Knee replacement surgeries have a waitlist of ~18 months in Canada. Patients are willing to pay for treatment abroad to be able to start walking sooner.

5) Elective surgery
Many medical tourists travel abroad seeking elective surgery that are not normally covered under insurance policies. These mainly consist of plastic, cosmetic and dental treatment.

6) Opportunity to travel
Some tourists that have plans of travelling already made, chose to get minor medical treatment while abroad. These treatments mainly consist of quick, outpatient procedures like dental fillings, root canals, dermatology treatment.
